How to Read a Cannabis Label: The 10-Second Check the Best Brands Pass
The fine print on a cannabis package isn't decoration. It's a compliance label, and every line is there to tell you something. Once you know the order to read it in, you can check any product in about ten seconds — and spot which brands take it seriously.
Batch Number
The single most important line. It ties the product in your hand to a specific production run and to that run's lab report. If you want to check potency or safety, the batch number is how you make sure the report matches. See how to read a COA.
Product Type and Strain
- Product type — all-in-one vape, cartridge, concentrate, infused Thai stick and so on.
- Strain — the cultivar name.
- Strain type — often indica, sativa or hybrid, sometimes with a lean such as hybrid-indica.
Harvest Date vs Manufacture Date

For concentrates and vapes, the harvest date refers to the starting material — the flower that went into extraction — so a gap between the two dates is normal. Some products are made from more than one batch of flower, and the manufacturer's records tie each input to the finished product.
Potency
Usually total THC, total cannabinoids and CBD. Remember that "ND" means not detected, and total THC is calculated with a 0.877 factor — here's why.
Net Weight
How much product is in the package. A Big Cloud 2G is two full grams — 2,000 mg. Full weight should mean full weight.
Ingredients
Especially for vapes: does flavor come from cannabis-derived terpenes, botanical terpenes or a blend? None is automatically bad, but you should know. Our flavor guide explains the difference.
The Licensee and Warnings
Every compliance label names the licensed business that made or packaged the product, with its license number, plus required warnings — adults 21 and older, keep out of reach of children.
The QR Code
