How to Find the Most Potent THC Vape: Total THC vs THCa, Explained
Everybody wants to know which vape is the strongest. The problem is that most people read potency numbers wrong — and some packaging is happy to let them. Here's how to actually compare THC vapes, so "most potent" means something real.
The Three THC Numbers
A lab report's potency section usually shows:
- THCa — the acid form of THC found in the raw plant.
- Delta-9 THC — the active form, often written d9-THC.
- Total THC — a calculated number combining the two.
Add the first two together and you'll usually get a number that doesn't match the third. That's not an error. It's the conversion factor.
Why You Can't Just Add Them
THCa converts to THC when heated — a process called decarboxylation. During that conversion it loses part of its molecule, which leaves as carbon dioxide. So only about 87.7% of THCa's weight becomes THC.
The standard formula:
Total THC = Delta-9 THC + (0.877 × THCa)
Labs often include other THC forms like Delta-8 or Delta-10 when present, and most print the exact formula at the bottom of the potency section.
A Simple Hypothetical Example
These numbers are made up for illustration only:

That's almost a ten-point difference. If a brand advertises the "wrong" number, it's overstating potency.
How to Compare Two Vapes Fairly
- Compare Total THC to Total THC. Not THCa to Delta-9, and not marketing to marketing.

- Look at total cannabinoids too. It shows overall concentration beyond THC.
- Remember batches vary. Plants aren't identical, so the same strain can test differently harvest to harvest.
Potency Isn't the Whole Story
